GOOSE LAKE — Errors spoiled a superb pitching matchup Friday afternoon.

Behind Hailey Bickford, the Maquoketa softball team took advantage of six Northeast miscues in a 9-0 win. Bickford pitched a complete-game four-hitter, while striking out 11.

Northeast pitcher Audrey Moehr allowed the nine runs — four earned — on 12 hits.

The Cardinals went 24-11 last season. They expect better this year.

“We don't like to settle for anything less than a 30-win season, maybe better,” Nelson said. “That's something we've really tried to instill in the kids, having that mental aspect all the time, especially come tournament time. We've told them never to be satisfied.”

The Cardinals return all-confernce selections shortstop Kelsey Bollman and second baseman Brooklyn Koranda. Marissas.

“We should definitley be able to compete,” Nelson said. “I don’t want to jinx myself, but we should definitely be able to compete.”

Northwest, meanwhile, returns all nine starters from last year’s 13-18 team.

Moehr went 9-14 with a 2.08 ERA.

Outfielder Taylor Kaczinski led the team with a .341 average. Right fielder Whitney Rorah hit .317 with a team-high five doubles, first baseman Paige Sesser batted .309 with a team-high 20 runs and third baseman Demi Diedrich led in triples (five) and RBIs (16).

“We got everybody back,” Northeast coach Travis Eversmeyer said. “It’s huge, since five or six of them made states in track. We didn’t have practices, but they already knew what to expect from us, and we knew what we were getting from them.”
