Morrison baseball postponed to today

MENDOTA, Ill. — Rainy conditions made the field unplayable, forcing officials to move Wednesday’s Class 2A Illinois sectional baseball semifinal between Morrison and Mendota back one day.

The two teams will try again to play at 4:35 p.m. today. The semifinal between Milledgeville/Polo and Byron that had been scheduled for today will be moved back to 4:30 p.m. Friday, but the championship game still is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in Mendota. The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to Monday’s Augustana Super-Sectional in Rock Island, Ill.



West Carroll game moved back 2 hours

BYRON, Ill. — A postponement Wednesday has moved West Carroll’s Illinois Class 2A sectional semifinal softball game today back two hours.

The Thunder now are scheduled to play Harvard at 6:30 p.m., following a 4:30 p.m. game between Stillman Valley and Oregon that was postponed from Wednesday because of the weather.

Today’s two winners will square off at 11 a.m. Saturday for the Byron Sectional title, with the winner of that game advancing to Monday’s Augustana Super-Sectional in Rock Island, Ill.



DeWitt’s Steffens earns track award

WAVERLY — Kelsey Steffens, a senior member of Wartburg College’s NCAA Division III national championship women’s track and field team, received two postseason awards at the school.

Steffens received both the Coaches and Most Inspirational awards at a ceremony this week.



Iowa Conference cites area scholar-athletes

CEDAR RAPIDS — Six athletes who attended area high schools are among 189 students receiving Iowa Conference Academic All-Conference honors for spring sports.

To earn the designation, the student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.5 grade-point average or better.

The area athletes honored are Coe baseball juniors Ryan Schisler of Morrison, Ill., and Chris Handke of Bellevue; Luther junior track athlete Drew Burmahl, who attended Maquoketa; Central sophomore softball player Katie Tenboer of Morrison; Loras sophomore track athlete Tara Kilburg, who attended Andrew; and Wartburg senior track athlete Kelsey Steffens of Central DeWitt.
