ALEDO, Ill. — After squandering a 4-0 lead and dropping its first game Saturday, West Carroll bounced back with back-to-back one-hitters to finish 2-1 and take second place at the Aledo Classic softball tournament.

ROWVA, from Oneida, Ill., strung together six of its eight hits in the fifth and sixth innings — scoring three times in each frame — to beat West Carroll 6-4 in Game 1. Kaylyn Nelson hit a three-run double for ROWVA in the fifth inning. Britta Johnson tied the game with a one-out, run-scoring triple in the sixth. After a walk, Sarah DeSclepper’s two-run single put ROWVA ahead 6-4.

“We had plenty of opportunities but could not come up with that big hit when we needed,” West Carroll coach Don Mathey said.

In the second game, Taylor Cole and Tiffany Cole limited Peoria High to one hit — a one-out single in the first inning — in a five-inning, 11-0 victory for the Thunder. Chelsey Sipe led off West Carroll’s first inning with a single and eventually scored on Katie Wiersema’s groundout for the only run the Thunder needed.

Jordan Kasbohm followed up by throwing a one-hitter for West Carroll in a 5-1 win against Aledo (19-4). The win gave West Carroll (24-6) the tiebreaker edge over Aledo for second place.

“This was by far our most complete game of the year,” Mathey said. “Jordan pitched her best game of the year and was a leadoff home run (by Courtney Bennett) away from a perfect game. Jennesa (Miller) had a huge game at the plate.”

Miller’s two-out double in the third scored Wiersema, who had singled in the previous at-bat, with the tying run. Miller then scored the go-ahead run on Kasbohm’s double.

The Thunder scratched across another run in the sixth inning on a single by Haley Johnson and sacrifice and Kelsey Bull’s single, then Miller provided some insurance with a two-run home run in the seventh.

Kasbohm, Wiersema and Sipe were named to the all-tournament team.
