Indian boys, Trojan girls claim Big East track titles

GOOSE LAKE – Camanche boys track and field coach Mark Metzger was mobbed by his team members as it was announced that the Indians had taken the 2008 Big East Conference Championship and Metzger was named the conference coach of the year.

The Indians edged out meet host Northeast on their way to the title behind three wins and three runner-up finishes.

Northeast finished just seven points behind the Indians, as Camanche took the team title with 126 points, while the Rebels tallied 119.

Bellevue raced to a third place finish with 76 points.

Andrew tied with North Cedar for fourth place with 44 points, while Preston-East Central tied Lisbon for sixth with 38.

Prince of Peace and Calamus-Wheatland finished ninth and 10th respectively with 20 and 10 points.

Camanche’s first win came in the Shuttle Hurdle relay where the team of Blake Bark, Ken Snodgrass, John McElroy and Aaron Jewell ran a time of 1:02.48 for the win.

Julian Emert followed that with a win in the 100-meter dash in 11.36.

The Indians final win came in the 4x100 as Emert, Snodgrass, McElroy and Jewell turned in a time of 46.13 for the gold.

Camanche got second place finishes from their 4x800-meter relay team of Mike Sullens, Vince Schawl, Taylor Grim and Brad Maxwell. The foursome took second to Northeast with a time of 8:47.14.

The Indians got two more relay runner-ups in the 4x200 with Emert, Snodgrass, Sullens and Maxwell and in the 1600-meter medley with McElroy, Sullens, Codie Adams and Schawl.

Camanche head coach Mark Metzger was pleased with the total team performance the Indians turned in.

“We had a great night of performances,” Metzger said. “We had multiple great performances from the sprints to the distance. Jon Gonzalez had a big throw in the discus, our 4x100 came in seeded third and won. Codie Adams, Vince Schawl and Brad Maxwell had super running in the distance and our 4x400 pulled out third in a great effort.”

Northeast won nine events on the evening to take second to Camanche.

Junior Ryan Krogmann was voted by league coaches as the meet’s MVP as he won the 800-, 1,600-meter run and anchored the winning 4x400 team.

Krogmann won the 800 and 1,600 in conference record times of 2:00.67 and 4:32.66.

Krogmann teamed with Baron Loots, Jordan Howe and Shaun Eberhart to take the gold in a time of 3:36.88.

The Rebels got wins in the throws from Ivan Sandoval in the discus with a throw of 124-10 and from Derek Ketelsen in the shot put with a toss of 48-11.

Jacob Dever won the 110-meter hurdles in time of 16.02, narrowly edging out Bellevue’s Mitchell Michel by eight-hundreths-of-a-second.

Northeast got three more relay wins on the night in the 4x800, 4x200, and the 1600-meter medley relays.

The 4x800 team of Loots, Howe, Brent Blanchard and Eberhart won the event in 8:39.02.
