CLINTON — The Clinton River Queens took second to Bettendorf at the Mississippi Athletic Conference girls tennis tournament.
The Bulldogs tallied 23 team points and won six of the nine brackets on their way to the championship.
The River Queens tallied 19.5 points led by the MAC No. 1 singles champion, Ellen Russell, who scored a 6-2, 6-2 win in the title match over Pleasant Valley’s Chelsea Allbaugh.
In the No. 2 singles bracket Clinton’s Claire Cornilsen won a conference title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bettendorf’s Brooke Johnson in the championship.
Sarah Massey took the River Queen’s other win on the second day of competition, with an 8-0 win over Muscatine’s Amanda Safley in the consolation final.
“We had some outstanding play by Ellen Russell, Claire Cornilsen, Katie Crites and Megan Determan in singles,” Clinton head coach Cindy Rasche said. “I think we will meet Bettendorf again in the final round of eight for state. We’ll work hard in practice so we win all those tie breakers the next time. We’ll create some pressure situations in our drilling.”
