L-Kings split over weekend

By Ted Schultz
Herald Sports Editor

LANSING, Mich. — The Clinton LumberKings split games at Lansing over the weekend, winning 3-2 Saturday at Oldsmobile Park before losing 7-4 on Sunday.

Clinton shot out to a 3-0 lead in Saturday’s game before holding on to win.

The LumberKings scored once in the second inning. With two out, David Peterson singled to center field and scored on a double to left by Wally Backman II.

The LumberKings added two more runs in the fourth. With one out, Mauro Gomez singled to right and crossed the plate on a triple to center by K.C. Herren.

Peterson followed with an RBI single to center.

Lansing closed within 3-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Jonathan Jaspe had an RBI double in the frame, while another run scored on a double play.

Clinton snuffed out a potential Lansing rally in the ninth inning.

Travis Snider led off the inning with a single and went to second on a groundnut.

After a strikeout, Pina was leading off second when Clinton catcher Manny Pina threw down to shortstop Marcus Lemon. Lemon tossed to Peterson, who got Snider caught in a rundown. He threw to Jose Vallejo, who tracked down Snider and applied the tag for the game-ending out.

Omar Poveda (3-0) scattered four hits over six innings to earn the win. He struck out five.

Jeremiah Haar worked the final 2/3 of an inning to earn his fourth save.

Adrian Martin (0-1) suffered the loss.

On Saturday, the LumberKings shot out to a 3-0 lead.

Clinton scored twice in the first inning, as Lemon walked and Chad Tracy belted a two-run homer over the left-field wall.

Clinton tacked on another run in the third. Lemon led off with a double, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a triple to center by John Whittleman.

Lansing turned things around in the fifth, erupting for seven runs. Yuber Rodriguez sparked the rally with a three-run homer to left.

Clinton concluded the scoring with a run in the eighth. With one out, Gomez doubled to left and scored on a single to center by Herren.

Chase Lirette (4-1) earned the pitching win, giving up five hits and fanning five in five innings.

Reliever Jared Locke (0-2) suffered the loss.

The teams conclude their series with a game tonight, beginning at 6:05 p.m. Clinton time.
