CAMANCHE — For the second time in less than a week the Camanche Indians edged out Northeast to take a team title.
The Indians won the 33rd Annual Boys Indian Relays for the second year in a row with 125 points to Northeast’s 116, five days after winning the Big East crown from the Rebels by seven points.
Camanche head coach Mark Metzger points to his team’s balance as the key to their success.
“We’re not winning a lot of events, but we have good depth,” Metzger said of the recent team wins. “This meet was similar to the Big East meet. We scored points in every event but one. We didn’t score in the 400, but we didn’t have anybody running. This meet and the Big East meet were two meets we wanted to win since the beginning of the season. It took a while, but we are finally getting to where we want to be. We’re going to rest up and get ready for Saturday (District meet) and see what we can get done.”
Metzger was also pleased the Indians were able to top Northeast again.
“They were the team to beat,” Metzger said. “They have runners who are some of the best in the state, but they may have been looking ahead to districts. We had to take advantage of that. Also, the field events were big for us tonight.”
Following the Indians and the Rebels was Bellevue with 87 points. Preston-East Central took sixth with 40 and Andrew was seventh with 38.
Prince of Peace and Calamus-Wheatland tied for eighth with 22 points to round out the field.
The Indians won three events on the night, led by Matt Shaw’s win in the discus. Shaw won the event with a toss of 123-3.
Camanche added two relay wins in the 4x800 (8:44.00) and the 4x100 (46.10).
The Indians also took runner-up in six events on the evening.
Taking second for the Indians was Codie Adams in the 1,600-meter run (4:53.10).
Senior Jon Gonzalez took two silver medals in the throws. Gonzalez was second in the shot put with a toss of 42-8 1/2 and in the discus with a distance of
118-1. Mike Sullens was second in the long jump with a leap of 18-5.
Northeast took gold in six events led by Ryan Krogmann’s two individual wins. The Rebel junior won the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.92 and the 800 in a time of 2:00.15.
Krogmann also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team that won gold with a clocking of 3:37.00.
Senior Derek Ketelsen won the shot put with a toss of 47-10.
The Rebels added wins in the 4x200 (1:37.00) and the Distance medley (3:51.00).
Bellevue won one individual gold and one relay gold on their way to a third place team finish.
Brandt Moore was first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:49.00. The Comets also had a win in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1:03.47.
Jan Teichgraeber provided Preston-East Central with their lone win on the night as he broke the tape in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10:54.00.
Andrew’s Corey Manders won two golds as the Hawks finished seventh.
Manders won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.75 and the 400-meter hurdles in 57.70.

Eric was second in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:10.76 and Drew was second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:00.76.
