GOOSE LAKE – Several area athletes advanced to the Iowa Class 1A State Track and Field meet in Des Moines with their performances at the district/regional meet at Goose Lake on Saturday.
In the girls portion of the meet, Preston-East Central won the team title with 108 points, while Northeast was second with 91. Calamus-Wheatland took third with 65 points as Prince of Peace (50) and Andrew (40) were sixth and eighth respectively.
The Trojans advanced state qualifiers in eight events.
Leading the way for Preston-East Central was Lauryn Camp who won both the discus and shot put to automatically advance. Camp won the discus with a distance of 108-8 and the shot put with a toss of 35-9.
Junior Tiffany Bormann was first in the high jump as she cleared 5-3.
Brooke Tebbe also qualified in the long jump with a leap of 15-6 1/2.
“We have had success all season with our field events and today was no exception,” Preston-East Central head coach Mike Kelly said. “Lauryn Camp and Tiffany Bormann have been very consistent all year. Those two along Brook Tebbe in the long jump were able to get us 34 points and we were off and running.”
Trista Shannon won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.33 to qualify and anchored the Trojan’s Sprint medley relay team that won the event with a time of 1:57.62. The other team members included Brook Tebbe, Brena Smithson and Jessica Lane.
Shannon took the baton in fourth place and ran her team to the gold and state qualification by taking the lead in the last 50 meters.
“I just wanted to beat the girls ahead of me when we were behind,” Shannon said. “We wanted to get our senior, Jessica Lane, to state.”
Preston-East Central’s 4x800-meter relay team of junior Ellen Schulz and freshmen Emily Henningsen, Nicole Trenkamp and Jalynn Tebbe took first with a time of 10:34.85.
The Trojans other qualifier was Smithson, a sophomore, who made it in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.57.
Afterwards, Kelly commented on his state qualifiers.
“We felt our 4X800 had an excellent chance going in,” Kelly said. “The sprint medley we knew would be tight. Trista is just now getting into top form after missing most of the outdoor season with a broken arm. We have learned that if she is anchoring a relay, never say never. Brena Smithson and Trista have been a strong one-two combo and were again today.”
Northeast did well in qualifying athletes in six events.
Leading the way for the Rebels was Morgan Casey who won gold in four events on Saturday.
Casey won individual golds in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs with times of 2:21.98 and 5:03.44.
The sophomore was also part of winning relays in the 4x400 and the Distance medley.
The 4x400 team of Audrey Moehr, Maria Rickertsen, Demi Diedrich and Casey turned in a time of 4:17.34 in the win. The foursome also won the distance medley with a time of 4:21.35.
Following the 4x400 win, her fourth of the day, Casey was understandably happy.
“I’m super excited. It’s nice to know we have four events in and I don’t have to sit by the computer tonight to see if we got in.” Casey said.
Casey is also anxious to get back on the blue track of Drake Stadium after getting injured competing at Drake Relays last month.
“I’m really excited to get back on that blue track and to not step on the rail and do well,” Casey added. “Though as long as I’m running and doing my best, I’m happy.”
The Rebels shuttle hurdle relay team of Shalyn Gerlach, Danika Loots, Mallory McLaughlin and Shawna Spain qualified for Des Moines with a winning time of 1:09.00.
Freshman Demi Diedrich received an at large bid in the 100-meter dash with a qualifying time of 13.02.
Prince of Peace will be sending athletes to Des Moines in three events.
The Irish 4x400 team of Kylee Hyde, Ari Aquilani, Kimberly Bertram and Katie Isenhour took second in the district and qualified with an at large bid with a time of 4:23.69.
Junior Brooke Craig will be returning to Drake Stadium after competing in the Drake Relays in the long jump. Craig made the cut with a leap of 15-7 1/2.
The Irish freshmen duo of Hyde and Isenhour each qualified in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:00.94 and 1:02.78 respectively.
Calamus-Wheatland’s Molly Slattery made it in a pair of events. The Warrior senior will be participating in the 1,500 and the 3,000.
Andrew’s Michelle Deppe collected a pair of golds on Saturday. Deppe won the 100- and the 400-meter hurdles with times of 15.31 and 1:09.36 respectively.
On the boys side, Northeast led the way in area qualifiers with athletes making the cut in seven events. The Rebels finished second in the team standings with 103 points, while Andrew was fourth with 46. Preston-East Central was seventh with 35 points and Prince of Peace was 10th with 24.
Ryan Krogmann was the Rebels workhorse, collecting four gold medals, while qualifying in two individual and two relay events.
Krogmann won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.73 and the 1,600 with a clocking of 4:47.57.
In the 1,600, Krogmann edged out fellow qualifier Prince of Peace’s Drew Sikkema by just over two seconds.
“I knew going in, that I had a good chance to qualify,” Krogmann said. “I wasn’t trying to get a personal record or anything, I just wanted to finish first or second. A lot of people peak at districts so you never can tell what is going to happen for sure.”
Krogmann likes having somebody like Sikkema to push him on the track.
“It’s a friendly rivalry,” Krogmann said. “Off the track we are friends, but on it there is a little bit of rivalry, a friendly rivalry. He is such a good competitor.”
Sikkema, who also qualified with a win in the 3,200-meter run, echoed the sentiments of Krogmann.
“It is a friendly rivalry,” Sikkema said. “I’ve been playing basketball against Ryan since sixth grade. In the 1,600, with 300 meters left I told him not to push it because my coach told me we had a decent lead.”
Krogmann anchored the 4x800 and the Distance medley teams to wins.
The Rebel junior teamed with Shaun Eberhart, Jordan Howe and Baron Loots in the 4x800 to win in a stadium and district record time of 8:23.36.
In the Distance medley; Krogmann, Loots, Jacob Dever and Lucas Rorah teamed up to win with a time of 3:42.77.
Northeast’s Derek Ketelsen qualified in the shot put with a district winning toss of 48-0 1/2.
Northeast also qualified in the 4x400 with the team of Eberhart, Loots, Howe and Alec Gluesing. Dever also made it in the 110-meter hurdles, while Eberhart joined classmate Krogmann in the 800-meter run as the pair finished one-two.
“I knew going in that I had to be in the top two, so when Ryan kicked it in the last 200, I did too,” said Eberhart who also qualified last season as a sophomore. “It is nice to qualify again after me and Kenny (McChurch) made it last year.”
Andrew will send athletes to Des Moines in four events this year led Corey Manders.
Manders, a senior will compete in the 400-meter dash, 110- and 400-meter hurdles at Drake Stadium.
Manders won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.66 and the 400 in a time of 56.58.
Teammate Brandon Wagner will join Manders in the 400-meter hurdles after taking second on Saturday.
Manders also anchored the Hawks shuttle hurdle relay team to second place district finish with a time of 1:02.79. Joining Manders on the team were Wagner, Jesse Bliss and Travis Manders.
The Iowa State Track and Field Meet will take place Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.
