LumberKings avoid sweep with 4-2 win
Clinton scores three in third inning then holds on for win
DAVENPORT — The Clinton LumberKings used a big third inning to take a 4-2 win over Quad Cities and salvage one game of a four-game series with the River Bandits on Tuesday in Midwest League action.
The LumberKings third began with a pair of walks by Carlos Dominguez and Kyle Murphy.
Davis Stoneburner singled to third to load the bases.
Quad Cities starter (L, 6-3) balked to score Dominguez, giving Clinton the 1-0 lead.
Tim Smith singled to score Murphy and to move Stoneburner to third.
After Matthew Lawson popped out to first, Mitch Moreland popped out to right field. Stoneburner tagged to give the L-Kings the 3-0 lead. Smith was doubled up on the play as he could not get back to first after the pop out.
Quad Cities answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third.
Brett Wallace singled to score Oliver Marmol and Adron Chambers, pulling the Bandits within one at 3-2.
That was all the scoring Clinton allowed in the game as three LumberKing pitchers combined to allow five hits and strikeout eight.
Starter Jorge Quintero improved his season record to 6-6 in the win. He allowed three hits, while striking out four.
Julio Santana came on in the sixth and allowed two hits in two innings of work. Chris Dennis saved his third game of the season with two innings of perfect pitching. He struck out four.
The LumberKIngs added an insurance run in the fifth on a Smith solo home run to right field. The round-tripper was Smith’s ninth of the season.
Smith led Clinton with two hits and two RBIs. Smith now has 57 RBI on the year.
Moreland collected his 82nd RBI of the season on the sacrifice fly in the third.
The LumberKings now return to the friendly confines of Alliant Energy Field for a five-game home stand starting tonight. The LumberKings will host Western Division leading Burlington for a three-game set tonight, Thursday and Friday. First pitch for each contest is set for 7 p.m.
Clinton sits at 26-25, four-and-a-half games behind the Bees in the division.
Peoria comes to town on Saturday and Sunday for a two-game series.
