CAMANCHE — The Bellevue Comets improved their record to 1-1 as they took a 27-3 decision from the Camanche Indians in a Class1A district football game Friday night.

“Mistakes, their killing us,” said Camanche head coach Steve Doughterty.”This was our second game of the season and overall I feel that we are on the virge of earning our first win.”

It was the second game for both teams and the it was the second loss for the Indians who lost last week to the Northeast Rebels 21-0.

The Indians won the toss and took the opening kickoff and picked up several first downs with some nice run from Mike Sullens who picked up 65 yards of 10 rushing attempts, but then were forced to punt.

The Comets got good field position on the Indians 41 yard line and they picked up a couple of first downs on several runs and then scored on a 29-yard pass from Corbin Ploessl to Jordan Ries and the kick for the extra point was block putting them on top 6-0 with 3:39 showing on the clock.

The Indians defense held them until late in the first period when the Indians fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Comets Mike Peters on the Indians 40 yard line. They picked up a couple of first downs but the Indians were able to keep them from scoring the rest of the quarter, keeping the score at 6-0.

The Comets came out strong to open the second quarter and moved the ball into Indian territory, where Trevor Roling scored on a ten yard run and the extra point run failed, to make it 12-0 with 10:27 to go in the first half.

Both teams had several chances during the remainder of the second quarter but the Comets were able grab another score just before halftime when Ploessl hit Ries for a 27-yard pass and the extra point was good to put them on top 20-0.

Neither team was able to score in the third quarter.

The Comets quarterback Ploessl broke away for a 41 yard TD run with 9:49 left in the final quarter to move on top 27-0.

The Indians got things going for a short time in the fourth quarter and moved the ball way down to the Comets 27 yard line and on fourth down the Indians got some points on the board when Kastriot Asani kicked a field goal to make it 27-3.

Next week the Comets (1-1) will host North Linn while the Indians (0-2) will head to Iowa City Regina.

“Our defense has a lot to improve on and I was happy with the way our offense showed some improvement tonight,“ said coach Doughterty.
