Casey, Sikkema capture titles at Midland races

WYOMING — Morgan Casey of Northeast and Drew Sikkema of Prince of Peace continued their dominating cross country seasons Monday by winning the individual titles at the Midland Invitational.

Sikkema topped several long-standing rivals in winning the 5,000-meter boys race at Little Bear Recreation Club. He completed the course in 16 minutes, 40 seconds. Brandt Moore of Bellevue Marquette took second, 23 seconds back, and third-place Riley Bly of Prince of Peace was another 20 seconds behind. Codie Adams of Camanche (18:04) and Eric Sikkema of Prince of Peace (18:21) rounded out the top five.

With four of its runners finishing between seventh and 12th, however, Marquette edged the Irish 40-45 for the team title.

Casey got a challenge from Prince of Peace’s Audrey Griffin, but she won the girls race by 9 seconds. Casey finished in 16:12, with Griffin at 16:21. Katie Flogel of Marquette (16:49), Lorena Temple of Camanche (17:08) and Paige Daugherty of Marquette (17:17) completed the top five. Marquette captured the team crown with 32 points.
