MAYNARD — Preston has used a big passing game in recent victories, so Friday night in sprang the running attack on West Central. The result was a 42-30 upset victory against the Blue Devils, ranked fourth in the Iowa eight-player football ratings.
“It’s real big for our school, our kids, our staff and everyone,” Preston coach Kevin Behr said. “I had kind of set my sights on this game. We’re not satisfied with it; we want to keep the momentum rolling.”
The win vaulted the Trojans (4-2, 3-1) into a tie for second place in District 4.
Preston demonstrated right away that it wouldn’t be intimidated on the road. The Trojans scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to build an early lead.
“The West Central program has a lot of tradition, and it was big for us to come all the way up here and score two touchdowns in the first quarter. We spread it out a bit and used our speed and scored.”
Kyle Feller carried 28 times for 171 yards, and Behr said his big night probably was helped by the fact that quarterback Josh Feddersen had had some big passing nights recently.
“The past couple games, Josh has had real nice games and (Derrick) Trenkamp and the other receivers have had pretty nice games, so they focused on them,” Behr said. “I have said since the beginning that we wanted to be a balanced team and be tough to stop.”
Feller had a pair of rushing touchdowns, Walker Bormann ran for one, as did Feddersen. Feddersen and Hughes also connected on a touchdown pass.
