By Jerry Ramig

CAMANCHE — The Solon Spartans proved to the Camanche homecoming crowd why they are currently ranked No. 1 in Iowa High School Class 2A as they improved their record to 7-0 with a 56-0 win over the Camanche Indians in a District 5 contest Friday.

The Indians, who were looking for their first win of the season as they generated a little excitement of it being homecoming, but that spirit was short-lived as the Spartans scored four times in the first quarter and three times in the second and all seven extra point attempts were perfect to give them a 49-0 lead at halftime.

Senior quarterback Matt Morrison led his team on the opening drive, picking up three first downs along the way and then connected on a 42-yard pass play to Kyle Stahle and the kick was good by Colton Wears for a 7-0 lead with 9:45 showing on the clock.

He then passed for another score when Cody Strang scored on a 34 pass play and the kick was good to make it 14-0.

The Spartans scored two more touchdowns in the first quarter as James Morris, who led the team with 132 yards on 12 carries, put the score at the end of the first period 28-0.

The Spartans defense was tough all night as they held the Indians to just two first downs during the game.

The Spartans scored three times in the second quarter to go on top 49-0 at halftime. The clock would continue to run during the second half.

The Spartans had a new quarterback early in the second half and also had many new players in the game.

Patrick McManus caught two passes from Taylor Roth for a total of 22 yards and one first down. Handling the running duties for the Indians was Roth at quarterback picking up 22 yards on seven attempts. Other running backs were Mike Sullens, Jesse Carbajal, Brad Maxwell and Andrew Keeling.

The Indians did a much better job on defense in the second half as they held the Spartans to just one touchdown and that was in the third period. Playing some good defense for the Indians was Dann Kooi, Andrew Zimmerman, Jesse Carbajal and Brad Maxwell.

The Solon fresh-soph won their game 42-0.

Next week the Spartans will be at home when they host Iowa City Regina as both teams have identical records as of tonight’s games.

The Indians will be back at home next Friday when they host Center Point-Urbana on Senior night with game time set for 7:30 p.m.

“We knew that Solon had a good team coming in tonight. I felt that we played a much better second half, which was important to carry us into next weeks game which will be senior night,” said Camanche coach Steve Dougherty.
