STERLING, Ill. — Coach Wes Golden came away satisfied after his Clinton boys placed 18th and his girls team was 19th on Saturday at the Sterling Invitational cross country meet.
“This was the largest and fastest meet that we have ever participated in,” he said. “With over 30 teams, that included many of the best teams from Illinois and Iowa, it was a talent-rich field. We fared about as good as we could, considering the teams participating.”
Hattie Buikema had the best day for the Clinton varsity. She placed 56th in 20 minutes, 16 seconds. Teammate Grace Shemwell was just 12 seconds behind her in 64th place.
James Smith led the boys with a 76th-place finish in 16:56.
“I was proud of all the runners keeping their composure and giving it their best in very fast races,” Golden said. “This was a great prep race for the MAC meet that will be at the Ericksen Center this coming Thursday.”
