Griffin 3rd, Sikkema 4th for Irish

TROY MILLS — Freshman Audrey Griffin placed third in the girls meet and senior Drew Sikkema was fourth in the boys race to lead Prince of Peace on Saturday at the North Linn Invitational.

Eric Thein of Tipton, the top-ranked runner in the state in Class 2A, avenged an earlier loss to Sikkema by winning the boys race in 15 minutes, 48 seconds. Brennan McAllister of Cedar Rapids Xavier was second in 16:10, followed by Monticello’s Jud Schneider, No. 4 in 2A (16:23) and Sikkema in 16:27. Prince of Peace’s Riley Bly was 10th in 16:41.

Solon’s Jaisa Miller, ranked No. 5 in 2A, won the girls race in 15:27. Katy Moen of Wapsie Valley, ranked fourth in 1A, was the runner-up in 15:40, with the fifth-ranked Griffin 3 seconds behind her. Tipton’s Missy Miller, ranked sixth in 2A, and Julia Hunter of Iowa City Regina rounded out the top five.

“Audrey moved up well throughout her race, getting a nice third in an elite field,” Irish coach Dave Lawrence said.

The Prince of Peace girls finished 14th with 308 points. Williamsburg won with 89.

Xavier won the boys race with 58 points. Prince of Peace was sixth with 198.

“Riley, Eric (Sikkema, 31st in 17:39) and Joe (Schnier, 73rd in 18:52) had PRs in a big, fast field,” Lawrence said.
