44 unanswered points results in Senior Night loss

By Jerry Ramig
Herald Sports Writer

CAMANCHE — The Camanche Indians looked as if they were going to turn their program around as 15 seniors took the field on Senior Night and won the coin toss and elected to take first possession, which proved to be a good move.

They drove to a score on their first possession but wound up losing to Center Point-Urbana 44-6 on Friday night in Class 2A District 5 football.

Brad Maxwell took the opening kickoff to the Camanche 36-yard line, and the Indians picked up a couple of first downs with some fine runs by Andrew Keeling, Jesse Carbajal and Maxwell, and they were in Pointer territory, when Mike Sullens took the ball from the 49-yard line and scored the first touchdown.

The kick by Kastriot Asani was wide to put the Indians on top 6-0 with 7 minutes, 44 seconds, left in the period.

That lead didn’t last long as the Center Point-Urbana Stormin’ Pointers got good field position on the kickoff, and three plays later Dylan Ramsey scored his first of three touchdowns on a 41-yard run. The kick was good by Austin Plante, putting them on top 7-6.

The Pointers came into the game with a 1-6 record, while the Indians are still looking for their first win of the season.

Later in the first quarter, junior quarterback Plante kept the ball and ran 66 yards for the second score. The kick was blocked to make it a 13-6 score at the end of the first quarter.

The Indians had some good runs but had trouble getting first downs in the first half and had to punt several times.

The visitors took advantage of some good punt returns and scored three times in the second quarter to go on top 32-6 at halftime.

The Indians defense played well in the second half, holding the Pointers to just one touchdown in third quarter on a long run by Ramsey.

Playing some outstanding defense for the Indians were Dann Kooi, Blake Bark, Carbajal, Sullens and Corey Doyle. When the Indians got the ball, they started moving it well in the third quarter, picking up five first downs but just couldn’t come up with any scoring plays and were forced to punt.

It was the same story in the fourth quarter as the Pointers scored just one TD to put the game on a continuous clock, but the Indians defense stopped them several times.

The Pointers will play their final home game next Friday when they host third-ranked Iowa City Regina, which kost 27-0 to top-ranked Solon on Friday. The Indians will close their season on the road at Tipton.

Center Point-Urbana won the freshman-sophomore game 41-6.

“I think our offense made a huge stride tonight, and if we can get the defense to avoid the big plays, it will make a big difference in our game,” Camanche coach Steve Dougherty said. “I was proud of the way our kids never quit and never backed down.”
