CLINTON — The Ashford University women’s basketball team made it two wins in a row as they defeated the Calumet College of St. Joseph Crimson Wave from the Chicago area 86-61 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Kehl Arena.
With the win the Saints improved their season record to 2-1. Saints head coach Chris Powers said it was another good win for the team. The last time the two teams faced each other, the Saints took down the Crimson Wave on the road 75-49 on Dec. 1, 2007.
The Saints got on the board first with four field goals, one each from Kim Fabry (10 points), Kelly Fisher (team-high 23 points), Jordan Davis (13) and Michelle Woolley (eight) to go on top 8-5 after the first four minutes.
The Crimson Wave came back and tied the game at 8-all and then took their only lead of the game, 11-8, with 15 minutes, 27 seconds, showing on the clock.
The Saints answered with a couple of good scoring drives with a 30-11 run that put them back on top 38-19 with just over two minutes left in the first half.
They had balanced scoring from six different players and increased the lead to 19 points at halftime, 42-23. They also had a good day from the free-throw line connecting on 24 of 32 attempts.
In the second half, the Saints came out strong and increased their lead to 28 points, 68-40, midway through the period, and Powers began to substitute a few players to get some experience.
“This was another good win for our team,” Powers said. “Calumet College came out shooting the ball well, but we kept our composure and stayed with our game plan. We did a good job forcing turnovers again, and we shot the ball really well. It’s a good start to the season, but we’re far from being satisfied. We still have a lot of work to do and more games to win.”
The Saints play on the road Friday at Silver Lake in a non-conference game and then return home on Saturday when they host Illinois Institute for homecoming.
