Cougars still looking for win

Clinton Community College falls to Black Hawk by 83-49 score

By Jerry Ramig
Herald Sports Writer

CLINTON — The Clinton Community College Cougars are still looking for its first win of the young basketball season. The Blackhawk College Braves, from Moline, Ill., had little trouble with the Cougars as they took an 83-49 decision in a non-conference game Wednesday night at W. J. Yourd Gymnasium.

The Cougars are still playing with a short lineup as they still have three men on the injured list.

The Braves got on the board first with a pair of free throws on a technical foul and a basket from their big man John Peters (game-high 20 points) to go on top 4-0.

The Cougars got a basket each from Walter Quarles and Toney McCants to tie the game at 4-all after the first two minutes.

That was the only time of the game it was close as the Braves came up with a 21-3 run to go on top 25-7 midway in the first half.

Central DeWitt product, Jared Porth, hit a 3-pointer for the Cougars during that drive and then Delandez Williamson hit a basket and a free throw followed by a pair of field goals from McCants to cut the margin to 11 points 25-14 with 8:30 showing on the clock.

The visitors answered back with another 19-5 run to increase their lead to 25 points 44-19 at halftime.

The Cougars fared better in the second half as they hit 12 field goals, though every time they would get something going the Braves would always answer back and add to their lead.

The Cougars also struggled at the charity stripe, making just 8-of-21.

The Braves improved their record to 2-1 and had three players in double figures, led by Peters with 20, Adam Tillis who hit four 3-pointers for 12 points and Daveon Allen with 10 points.

The Cougars (0-2) will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Carl Sandburg for a 7 p.m. game and will return home Nov. 19 when they host the St. Ambrose JV at 7 p.m.

They had two players in double figures, McCants and Williamson both with 15 points.

“We regressed a little bit from our first game, but tonight we just didn’t show up at all. We are short handed but I thought our effort could have been much better as we have a lot of things to work on but we just didn’t come to play tonight,” said Cougar head coach Marcus Harris.
