MAC singles out Clinton trio
River Kings’ Murphy is first-team pick

Clinton High seniors Matt Murphy and Tyler Redman, and junior Austin Krick, were named to the All-Mississippi Athletic Conference football team that was released today.
Murphy was selected on both the offensive and defensive lines, while Redman was honored at wideout and Krick was picked on the defensive line. The River Kings finished with a 4-6 record and became the first Clinton team since 1996 to advance to the postseason.
“I’ve come to never be surprised with how all-conference teams come out,” Clinton coach Lee Camp said. “It’s up to somebody else’s vote and what they’ve seen. I see the kids over three months, and somebody else has a one-week window to see them.
“I don’t think anybody was skipped over. I’m happy for the kids and their recognition. As a coach, you always go in with higher expectations than what’s available.”
Murphy (6-foot-6, 235 pounds) was one of four players who was selected to the first team on both offense and defense.
“He’s a three-year starter, and he had to step it up on both sides of the ball and did a nice job for us,” Camp said. “It’s tough to get first-team on both sides of the ball. I thought he had a big year on both sides.”
Murphy and Krick were keys to the Clinton defense at the tackle spots. Krick was in on 45 tackles, including four for lost yardage, and Murphy made 32 tackles.
“Those two guys came up with quite a few tackles for loss and altered some teams’ plans to run up the middle,” Camp said.
Redman was one of the top receivers in the MAC, catching 41 passes for 475 yards.
“He did a tremendous job,” Camp said. “He runs real good patterns and knew if the blitz was coming to break off his route and be the hot receiver. He gave us a lot of experience. It’s a good honor for him because there a lot of kids in the conference who catch passes.”
Clinton also had two second-team selections: junior running back David Johnson and senior defensive back Sam Parker. Johnson led the River Kings with 502 yards rushing and also caught 26 passes for 408 yards. Parker played on the left side, often facing the opposing teams’ top receivers since most quarterbacks are right-handed.
If any River Kings were overlooked, it might have been senior linebacker Shawn Winoski. He received honorable-mention honors, but he led Clinton with six interceptions and was second with 52 tackles.
“It’s tough to get recognized as a linebacker,” Camp said, noting that only three players are selected to each of the three all-conference teams. “We run four linebackers and three teams run five. He was a big part of our defense. I thought Shawn did a tremendous job.”
Winoski was one of 10 River Kings to receive honorable-mention honors. Fellow senior Kaleb Frazier was mentioned at punter, and the rest were juniors: Jake Mangler at quarterback and defensive back; Ty Hatheway at running back; Steve Ralston and Zach Freudenberg on the offensive line; Drew Lakin at wideout; Sean Mulholland on the defensive line; and Ryan Cassidy and Derek Thornton at linebacker.
Clinton’s total of 10 juniors receiving some sort of honors was the highest number in the conference. The other nine teams combined to have 27 juniors cited, along with six sophomores. Davenport Central had the next-highest total of juniors honored with six.
“That’s fantastic that that many kids get some sort of recognition,” Camp said. “Hopefully, it fuels the fire to work hard and move up in the other coaches’ opinions.”
Conference runner-up North Scott claimed the top two awards. Kevin Tippet was named Coach of the Year, and Connor Dahlstrom was the Most Valuable Player. Dahlstrom was a unanimous first-team pick at running back, also made the first team at defensive back and was the second-team kicker.
“Both of them were deserving,” Camp said. “With Tippet, I think North Scott played above its preseason expectations, and Dahlstrom did a fine job on both sides.”
Dahlstrom was one of three unanimous picks on the all-conference squad, all on the offensive side. Iowa State recruit Kyle Lichtenberg, a tackle for Bettendorf, and teammate Pat Brown, a wide receiver, were the other two.
North Scott's Blake Anderson and Davenport North's Blake White were the other two-way, first-team players.
