Irish hand North Cedar 69-47 loss

STANWOOD — After losing for the first time this season over the weekend, the Prince of Peace girls basketball team got back to their winning ways with a 69-47 win over North Cedar in a matchup of its former Big East Conference rivals.

The Irish jumped out to a 24-11 lead after one quarter and never looked back as they held a 40-20 halftime lead over the Knights.

Prince of Peace head coach Dave Nelson was pleased with the way his team responded to a weekend loss to Bellevue Marquette in the championship game of the Holiday Tournament.

“We played a pretty solid game tonight,” Nelson commented. “Most of our points came off of turnovers.”

The Irish used their pressure defense to force North Cedar turnovers which, in turn, led to some easy baskets at the other end of the floor.

“North Cedar has good size,” Nelson continued. “So we knew we needed to pressure the ball.”

The strategy paid off as Prince of Peace built a 58-32 lead heading into the final frame.

Nelson was able to clear his bench and get 11 players in the game.

“We have a week to work on a few things that we need to improve,” Nelson added. “It’s great to be able to pretty much empty the bench and to see what a few others can do.”

The Irish are now 3-1 overall this season.
