CLINTON — The Ashford University basketball teams opened their home portion of the Midwest Collegiate Conference schedule Saturday afternoon as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Viterbo V-Hawks from LaCrosse, Wis., at Kehl Arena.
In the opening game the lady Saints suffered a disappointing 57-52 loss in a game that was tied several times and changed leads five times in the first half.
The Saints jumped out to an early 7-2 lead when Kim Fabry (team-high 15 points) drove the lanes and was fouled for a 3-point play along with a basket and two free throws from Bethany Mahmens (11 points) after the first three minutes.
The V-Hawks took the lead by four points but that didn’t last long as the Saints came up with some free throws to tie the game at 23 with just over four minutes until intermission.
Fabry hit a couple of key field goals, one a 3-pointer along with a few more free throws during the last two minutes of the first half to put the Saints back on top at halftime 31-27.
The V-Hawks came up with an 8-0 run to go back on top 54-49 with 3:28 showing on the clock.
The Saints managed to cut the margin to just two points on a basket from Michelle Woolley and a free throw from Mahmens but they hit three free throw to hold on for the win.
It was the first conference game for Viterbo who are now 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. They were paced by three players in double figures, Karina Mandylaris 16 points, Joni Stanek 11 and Sally Colby with 10.
The Saints, 6-7, 1-1 next game will be a non-conference game when they travel to Calumet College on Saturday and will not return home until Jan. 7 when they host William Penn College at 5:30.
“This was a disappointing loss. We didn’t do the little things it takes to win games. We can’t have 23 turnovers and give up 14 offensive rebounds and expect to win. That’s too much to overcome. In games we win, we take care of the ball and rebound and in games we don’t do those things, we lose. It’s that simple. We need to do a better job in these two categories in order to win games,” said head coach Chris Powers.
In the men’s game the Saints jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first four minutes of the game as Daniel Joiner (16 points) hit four field goals of which two were 3-pointers while Matthias Burns (team high 19 points) hit a bucket for their biggest lead in the game.
The teams exchanged baskets the remainder of the first period and then the V-Hawks cut the margin down to just two points 30-28 and then tied the game at 31-all with just under two minutes left in the first half.
The V-Hawks took advantage of some 3-point shooting and grabbed the lead for the first time at 34-31 with 1:30 showing on the clock.
But the Saints got a couple of free throws from Klynton Bollinger and a basket from Tim DePaoli to regain the lead at halftime by one point 35-34.
The Saints came out strong in the second half as Peter Tanzillo hit a couple of baskets along with a 3-point play from Burns to go back on top by eight points 42-34.
Now it was the V-Hawks turn as they answered back with a 21-2 run to regain the lead 55-44 with 12 minutes showing on the clock.
The Saints tried to come back a couple of times when Rashad Carrington hit a 3-pointer to cut the margin down to seven points 59-52 midway in the period but the V-Hawks maintained the big lead to hold on for their first conference win.
The V-Hawks had three players in double figures, paced by Eric Ambrose with 25 points, Scott Buschman 21 and Eddie Smudde with 10.
The Saints next game will be at St. Xavier University on Friday at 8 p.m.
Both Ashford teams will not be back at home until Jan. 7th when they host William Penn College in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at Kehl Arena with the ladies game at 5:30 p.m. and the men to follow.
“We made good shots tonight but we were not hitting them like we have in the past. We didn’t get a lot of scoring from our bench and defensively we didn’t get the job done as Viterbo played really well and it is always tough to lose a conference game at home, but we will just bounce back as we play again Friday,” said Ashford head coach Andy Eberhart.
