MIDLAND, Mich. — Entering Monday afternoon’s matinee between the Great Lakes Loons and Clinton LumberKings, many were expecting pitchers Yadier Alvarez and Nick Neidert to steal the headlines in a low-scoring affair. The Loons used a three spot in the 8th inning to prevail 8-6 at Dow Diamond.

Trailing 6-5 heading into the bottom of the 8th, reliever Kyle Wilcox walked the bases loaded intertwined with two fly outs. Matt Walker was called upon to try and get the final out of the frame but surrendered a two-run double to Saige Jenco to give Great Lakes the 7-6 lead. Zach McInstry, who went 2-for-4 with double on the day, legged out an infield single that plated the final insurance run.

Great Lakes takes two of three from the LumberKings to make it a 5-1 homestand.

The LumberKings didn’t waste any time jumping on Alvarez when Alex Jackson took a fastball over the 400-foot center field wall for a two-run shot in the first inning.

Clinton tagged him for two more on a wild sequence in the 3rd inning when Luis Liberato scored on a single from Rayder Ascanio. On the same play, Ascanio worked his way around the bases when a missed tag by McKinstry allowed him to reach second base and a wild throw to third got by Gage Green, paving the way for Ascanio to come around to score.

After Eric Meza singled in McKinstry to make it a 2-1 deficit early, the Loons trailed 4-1 in the 4th until Matt Jones rocketed a ball just under the scoreboard in right field for a two-run shot. Will Smith gave Great Lakes their first lead of the afternoon an inning later with a line drive up the box to make it 5-4.

With three relievers each throwing an inning to close out the game for the Loons, lefty Victor Gonzalez gave up the lead in the 7th as Chris Mariscal doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Rafael Fernandez.
