CLINTON — Just five hours and six minutes after the first pitch was thrown on Saturday night, James Alfonso ended a marathon of a game.

Alfonso, the Clinton LumberKings catcher, hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 18th inning to give the LumberKings a 2-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in the 18th inning.

Alfonso had three hits in the game, and all three of them came in extra innings. The game was scheduled for seven innings as a make-up after Thursday's game was rained out.

So, Clinton and Cedar Rapids played 11 more innings.

Saturday's 18-inning affair was the longest game that the LumberKings have been involved in since Game 2 of the 2010 Midwest League Championship Series against Lake County.

Over 500 pitches were thrown the game. Nick Kiel picked up the win in a 4-inning outing in which he allowed three baserunners.

Clinton swept the doubleheader by winning Game 2 in a 3-0 7-inning game.
