Randy Meyer and Dale Brand won their respective classes Saturday at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Summer Showdown event at Cordova Dragway Park.

Meyer won the Top Alcohol Dragster competition, while Brand was first in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class. Each driver qualified first in his respective class.

Meyer, Spring Hill, Kan., ran consistent 5.30s throughout eliminations, then had a 5.387-second pass at 260.21 mph in the final against Brandon Booher of Tolono, Ill., for his second win of the year. Meyer beat Christine Chambless of Scott City, Kan., and Dave Hirata of Lowell, Ind., in rounds one and two as he extended his points lead in the NHRA West Central Division. Booher, who qualified second, posted a 5.470-second lap at 260.26 mph.

The win for Brand, from Sully, was his first of the year. He went 5.668 seconds at 252.80 mph to defeat multi-division champion and veteran racer Vern Moats of Des Moines. Brand was consistent in his 2010 Monte Carlo with runs of 5.679 seconds and 5.660 seconds in rounds one and two, knocking out Scott McVey of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Ray Drew of Hales Corner, Wis.

Illinois home state racers David Billingsley and Pat Fitzpatrick each took home trophies. Billingsley, from Decatur, won in Comp Eliminator over former NHRA national champion Bruno Massel of Woodridge, Ill., in his 1993 Cutlass. Fitzpatrick, from Peoria, won in Super Comp at 165.54 mph over Jim LaBorde of Hibbing, Minn.

Michael Mans scored his second win of the year in Super Stock, ousting Fred Bartoli going 9.488, 136.30 mph in his 2000 Firebird. Mans picked up a win at the season-opening event at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kan., and he was also the division’s 2011 JEGS Allstar representative.

Chris Knudsen of Grimes ran down Daryl Bureski of Elgin, Ill., to win Stock Eliminator while Pat Martin of London, Ohio, and John Miller of Waterloo took the Super Gas and Super Street titles, respectively. Martin Special to the Herald

Other winners were Curtis Spracklin of Omaha, Neb., in the Sportsman Motorcycle class; Don Speer of Davenport in Top Dragster; and John Scali of Louisville, Ky., in the Jerry Haas Top Sportsman series.

West Central Division racers head to Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kan., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, August 26-27. That same weekend — running from Thursday, Aug. 25, to Sunday, Aug. 28, Cordova Dragway Park will host the 58th O'Reilly Auto Parts World Series of Drag Racing.
