CLEVELAND (AP) — John Danks had no reason to celebrate on his 30th birthday. The Cleveland Indians spoiled the occasion.
Hurt by poor defense, Danks gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday as the Chicago White Sox lost to the Cleveland Indians 4-2.
Catcher Geovany Soto had a throwing error, third baseman Conor Gillaspie turned two grounders into infield singles and second baseman Micah Johnson fumbled a bunt.
“You’ve got to play better than that to win ballgames,” Danks said. “I felt good mixing speeds and mixing pitches today. I felt I had good enough control. They just found some holes, and there were some other things we had to deal with.”
Danks (0-2) allowed an unearned run and six hits, dropping to 5-12 with a 5.13 ERA in 23 starts against Cleveland.
Chicago had won its previous three games.
“I thought Johnny actually pitched all right, but we didn’t do any favors behind him,” White Sox Manager Robin Ventura said.
