CLINTON — Megan Wagner of Preston has signed to play women’s golf at Ashford University, joining Ashley Crawford of Rockford, Ill., in coach Josh Davis’ recruiting class.

“Having Megan on our team strengthens our ability to make that run at a conference title next year,” Davis said. “We’re excited she’s on board, and I’m excited about the pieces that we’ve been able to put together for the future.”

Wagner initially encountered Ashford’s Director of Student Enrollment, Waunita Sullivan, on the ninth hole of her home course at Plum River Golf Course to spark interest in the women’s golf program. Davis followed with a visit to Preston High School shortly after to receive Wagner’s commitment.

Wagner was a state qualifier at Preston in her junior year. She placed third in the Big East Conference this spring, then was the district medalist last week.

“I’m really excited,” Wagner said. “I’m coming into a team that’s young and competitive and that gives me incentive to work harder. I’ll be able to work some kinks out during the summer and try to get my scores down.”

Wagner is the daughter of Mike and Sue Wagner and plans to pursue her degree in social science while at Ashford.
