GRAND CHUTE, Wis. — Clinton doubled its offensive production from the previous night just two batters into Friday’s Midwest League baseball game at Appleton.

But the pitching let down the offense, allowing the Timber Rattlers to overcome a 5-0 deficit and defeat the LumberKings 6-5 at Fox Cities Stadium.

No-hit a night earlier in a 2-0 loss to Peoria — when only a hit batter prevented a perfect game — the LumberKings got on the board quickly after traveling 315 miles north overnight. Clinton started the game with back-to-back walks off Luis Ortega. One out later, Pat Leyland’s two-run double put the Kings on top 2-0.

Clinton added a solo home run from Gianfranco Wawoe to lead off the the second inning and a two-run shot from Wayne Taylor in the fourth but managed just two hits the rest of the night after Ortega exited after four innings.

After their starting pitcher departed, the Timber Rattlers started swinging the bats better.

They pulled within 5-3 against starter Tyler Herb in the bottom half of the fourth. Alan Sharkey led off with a double and scored on Carlos Leal’s single. After a wild pitch put Leal on second, Elvis Rubio hit a run-scoring double. He scored when Greg McCall followed with a single.

A double play helped Herb get out of further trouble, but Wisconsin added one more run in the sixth, Herb’s final inning.

Singles by Leal, Rubio and Tucker Neuhaus produced the run.

Nick Kiel replaced Herb in the seventh and lasted just one-third of an inning.

Mitch Meyer started the rally with a bunt single and moved to third on Blake Allemand’s base hit. A sacrifice fly by Sharkey tied the game. After Leal singled to put runners on the corners, Kiel was replaced by Ronald Dominguez. Dominguez retired all five batters he faced; unfortunately for Clinton, the first out was a sacrifice fly by Sthervin Matos that produced the go-ahead run.

The series continues at 6:35 tonight when Clinton goes with Jarrett Brown (1-4, 4.63 ERA) against Kodi Medeiros (4-3, 4.13).
