Northeast dominated the running events Tuesday in Class B of the River Queen Invitational.

The Rebels won eight of the 15 races on their way to a 14-point victory over West Liberty. Northeast also grabbed three second-place and four third-place finishes on its way to 136 points. Camanche placed third with 103 points.

“Our runners are having a good year,” Northeast coach Pat Healy said. “We have a nice mix of sprinters and distance runners, some nice hurdlers. I don’t think there’s a running event we don’t score in. ... Where we are right now, we’re at a great spot. Our times are ahead of where they were last year at this time. That’s kind of a measuring stick I’ve always used.”

Northeast freshman Josye Kaczinski won three individual events — the most of any person.

“That’s a pretty strong performance for a freshman,” Healy said.

Kaczinski started the meet with a victory in the 3,000-meter run. She beat Camanche’s Lorena Temple by 3 seconds.

She then won the 800, by passing teammate Hannah Kilburg and West Liberty’s Kayla Kaalburg in the final 150 meters.

“I don’t know if the 800 is my strongest race,” Kaczinski said. “But I just kicked it in as hard as I could at the end.”

Kaczinski finished her day by winning the 1,500 by more than 2 seconds over Prince of Peace’s Audrey Griffin.

“I knew it was my last race and I wanted to give it my all,” Kaczinski said. “When it’s windy out, it’s a good idea to draft. At a certain point, you have to kick it. My coach helps me, tells me when I should probably go.”

Kaczinski stayed in a pack of five runners for the first 700 meters and then started to move to the front.

The meet started with temperatures in the low-50s and dipped as the sun went down and the meet progressed. Kaczinski didn’t seem fazed by the chill; she was one of the only competitors without long sleeves or leggings under her track uniform.

“It was freezing,” Kaczinski said. “Before I started, I kind of wished I had Under Armour, but I normally don’t run with Under Armour.”

Junior Danae Diedrich won the 100 and 200 for the Rebels and also anchored both the winning 400 and 800 relay teams.

“Diedrich in the 100 and 200 is really shining,” Healy said.

Northeast’s other victory came in the shuttle hurdle relay. Jaci Mulholland, Sammi Farrell, Morgan McAleer and Carlie Dever finished in 1:13.25, .4 seconds ahead of Maquoketa.

The Cardinals won three events, including setting a record in the sprint medley relay. The team of Hannah Gruenwald, Ashley Trentz, Aubree Taylor and Laura Nuernberger finished the race in 1:53.92, breaking the previous meet record of 1:55.93 set by Davenport Assumption in 2009.

Taylor won the 100 hurdles and Laura Osterhaus won the high jump.

Camanche won the 1,600 and distance medley relays, with both Kylie Vogel and Courtney Sowle running on both teams.

Gabby Vasconcelos won the 400 for Preston, and Bellevue won the 3,200 relay.
