CLINTON — Senior Pat Macaione tossed eight strong innings and sophomore Tyler Davis collected three RBIs for the Ashford baseball team Friday afternoon as the Saints wrapped up a five-game homestand with a 9-6 win over Clarke University.
Ashford pounded out 12 hits to improve to 20-17 on the year, wrapping up a homestand in which it took four out of five games. The Crusaders rallied for five runs in the ninth inning but came up just short to fall to 20-18 overall.
The Saints put two runners on in each of their first two trips to the plate but came up empty handed each time. Ashford broke through in the bottom of the third thanks to an R.J. Roberts sacrifice fly and Dylan Kester stealing home with Davis in a rundown to make it a 2-0 game.
Clarke cut the lead in half in the fourth, but Ashford answered with another pair of runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Kester and Davis’ run-scoring double one batter later.
The Saints broke open the game with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Ashford sent 10 batters to the plate, recording four hits and drawing three walks to make it a 9-1 game. Tanner Courtney, Jean Carlos Peralta, Davis and Kevin Silva were all credited with RBIs in the inning.
