JOLIET, Ill. – Senior Payton Geeting of Port Byron, Illinois, became the Ashford softball program’s single-season stolen base record holder Friday on Day 1 of the University of St. Francis Tournament.
Geeting stole seven bases to give her 36 for the season, surpassing Allie Klasen’s record that was set one year ago. The Saints went 2-1 on the day. They started things off with a 6-5 eight inning win over Purdue Calumet. AU picked up an 11-5 win in Game 2 against Robert Morris but came up just short of a perfect day after a 2-1 loss to St. Francis in the nightcap.
Brianna De La Rosa drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the eighth inning against Purdue Calumet.
Earlier in the game, Siera Spahiu followed singles by Klasen and Alex Bitto with her sixth home run of the year. De La Rosa also had an RBI triple in the win.
The second contest of the day belonged to the Ashford offense as the Saints connected for 18 hits against Robert Morris.
The Saints exploded for five runs on seven hits in the top of the third. Spahiu, Natalia Reynoso, De La Rosa and Taylor Ellestad all connected for run-scoring hits in the inning. Emily Lopez and De La Rosa stretched the lead to 9-4 in the fourth. Spahiu added an RBI single in the fifth, and Bitto came home on a wild pitch in the seventh to cap the scoring.
The final game of the night featured a pitcher’s duel between Nicole Schmidt and the St. Francis’ Jasmine Sifuentez, who combined to allow only 12 hits on the night.
Ashford’s first hit of the game produced its only run when Shelby Hobelman led off the top of the second with a solo home run to left field, her eighth of the season.
The Fighting Saints tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, and Ashford was unable to take advantage of runners on second and third in the fifth, coming up empty to keep the game tied.
St. Francis brought the game to a close in the bottom of the seventh, when Angelina Medo brought home the winning run with one out in the inning.
