DES MOINES — Sioux City East started out the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run that helped the Black Raiders defeat Bettendorf 61-53 in a Class 4A state quarterfinal on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (18-6) led 41-40 at the end of the third quarter, but the Black Raiders (22-2) scored seven unanswered points to start the final quarter.

Aidan Vanderloo topped off the run wit ha 3-pointer with 4:13 remaining. At one point late in the fourth quarter, East led by 11 points.

The Bulldogs also trailed by seven points at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Black Raiders 11-2 in the first 2:45 of the second half. In that run, J. Michael Young scored five points and Suni Lane had a dunk.

The Bulldogs had two players who scored in double-figures. Young led Bettendorf with 20 points that included five made free throws and he made all eight of his free-throw attempts.

Outside of Young’s eight free-throw attempts, the Bulldogs had just two other attempts at the line, and neither attempt was made.

The Black Raiders were 24 of 27 at the free-throw line. Van Rees, who led East with 25 points, was 13-for-15 at the line. Aidan Vanderloo scored 18 points and made the only three 3-pointers for East.

D.J. Carton scored 12 points, and he made five field goals.

Newton threats West

Iowa City West held Newton to six fourth-quarter points, and the Trojans held off the Cardinals 57-51.

The Cardinals (19-6) didn’t get their first points of hte quarter until there was 2:10 remaining in the game, and that came on a Garrett Sturtz layup. Even though Newton was without points for nearly six minutes, the Cardinals were down 49-47.

But, the Trojans (21-3) scored three points in a 27-second span thanks to three free throws from Patrick McCaffery.

Newton’s next-to-last basket was with 1:03 left, and that, too, came on a Sturtz layup. Newton’s final basket was with 43 seconds left via a jumper from Connor Gholson.

Devontae Lane and Connor McCaffery both scored 18 points for West. Connor McCaffery entered the state tournament scoring just under 20 points a game.

Kennedy tops Hempstead

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars had four players who scored in double-figures in a 55-47 win over Dubuque Hempstead.

Jackson Foley and Derrick Diggins both scored 143 points for the Cougars.

Much like Sioux City East did to Bettenforf, the Cougars dominated the free-throw line.

The Mustangs shot well from the line (11-for-14), but the Cougars were 26-for-35. Drake Brewster made eight of 11 free throws for Kennedy.

Brewster scored 13 points; Malik Haynes put up 10 for the Cougars.

Curtis Martin III led Hempstead with 19 points.

Valley edges North

In a matchup between two Des Moines teams, West Des Moines Valley’s Charley Crowley had a dunk with 3 seconds left to upend the Des Moines North Polar Bears 57-55.

Quinton Curry and Crowley combined for 37 points and 20 rebounds.

Neither team led by more than six points in the game.
