SOLON — For four innings it was smooth sailing and looking like another district baseball title was within Central DeWitt’s grasp.
Garret Finley was perfect through the first three innings, and the Sabers led host Solon 4-0 after four.
But the Spartans roared back in the fifth inning and defeated the Sabers 6-4 on Monday in the Class 3A District 8 championship game. Central DeWitt closed the season with a 25-16 record.
One inning after Finley used a strikeout to get out of a bases-loaded jam, the Spartans put together a six-hit, five-run fifth inning.
A three-run home run by Luke Ira sparked the comeback. His shot in the fifth pulled the Spartans (26-13) within 4-3. The blast off reliever McGwire Eden scored Jackson Pipolo and Spencer Wegmann, who had singled off Finley.
Later in the inning, a two-out, two-run single by Zach Wegmann gave Solon the lead.
Ira added an RBI single in the sixth to give Solon an insurance run.
Central DeWitt tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, but the game ended with DeWitt runners on first and second.
It was all Sabers early.
A two-out RBI single by Austin Weiss put them up 1-0 in the bottom of the first, and they added a second run when Weiss scored on a wild pitch.
DeWitt opened the second with back-to-back singles from Brad Gannon and Lucas Bixby as it pushed the lead to 3-0.
