Plane crash kills Redbird coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — A private plane returning from the NCAA basketball tournament in Indianapolis crashed in a central Illinois field on Tuesday, killing all seven people on board, including Illinois State University associate head basketball coach Torrey Ward, 36, and a Deputy Athletics Director Aaron Leetch, 37.

Rescue personnel found no survivors at the site near the city of Bloomington, and a coroner pronounced the seven occupants dead, McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage said at a news conference. The plane went down in a soybean field 2 1/2 miles from the Bloomington airport.

All seven victims, who were found strapped in their seats, died from blunt force trauma resulting from the crash, Coroner Kathleen Davis said.

The Cessna 414 twin-engine aircraft took off from Indianapolis and crashed just short of the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington after midnight, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

NCAA final earns top TV audience

NEW YORK (AP) — Even without an undefeated team, the NCAA title game drew its largest TV audience in 18 years.

Duke’s 68-63 comeback win over Wisconsin on Monday night on CBS averaged 28.3 million viewers, the most since 1997, when Arizona upset defending champion Kentucky in overtime, CBS and Turner Sports said Tuesday. That’s up 33 percent from the 21.3 million for Connecticut’s victory over Kentucky last year.

The games across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV averaged 11.3 million viewers, the most since 1993 and up 8 percent from a year ago.
