CEDAR RAPIDS – Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Stephen Gonsalves bid the Midwest League farewell Monday. Unfortunately for the Clinton LumberKings, he did it after beating them 5-0.

Gonsalves improved to 6-1 and didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the seventh inning. The win completed a four-game series sweep for the Kernels. After the game, the Minnesota Twins organization sent Gonsalves to Fort Myers of the high-A Florida State League.

Gonsalves struck out 11 over seven innings, one shy of his season high for strikeouts. The left-hander, whose only loss of the season came to Clinton, dominated the LumberKings all afternoon. He walked a season-high four but allowed a season-low one hit. He walked Arby Fields twice, and Chantz Mack and Daniel Torres once, and gave up a single to Chris Mariscal. That summed up the offense over the first eight innings for Clinton.

In his first start of the season against Cedar Rapids, Jeffeson Medina (2-5) lasted only two innings. It was the shortest start for any Clinton starter in 2015. Medina allowed five hits, walked two and allowed four earned runs.

An RBI single by Zack Larson put Cedar Rapids ahead 1-0 in the first inning, while a two-out two-RBI double by Brett Doe made it 3-0 in the frame. Nick Gordon scored on a wild pitch in the second inning, and Cedar Rapids led 4-0 after two innings.

Mariscal (2-for-4) and Estarlyn Morales (1-for-4) were the only Clinton hitters to record hits.

After a day off today, Clinton will begin a six-game homestand against Dayton and Bowling Green. The LumberKings take on Dayton at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
