LISBON — Preston avenged a loss in last year’s substate round and earned a spot in Saturday’s district final by beating Lisbon 7-2 in high school baseball Thursday night.

Colton Bormann and Matt Zeimet combined to limit Lisbon, the Big East Conference co-champion, to three hits. They also were among the offensive leaders for the Trojans.

Bormann hit an RBI double in the two-run first inning, while Zeimet had a single, a double and three RBIs. Blake Bormann added two hits and a pair of RBIs, and Craiton Andresen had a hit and a run batted in.

Colton Bormann, who lost a 2-0 pitchers dual against the Lions in last year’s battle to determine which team would advance to the Class 1A state tournament, retired the first 12 Lisbon batters Thursday. After giving up a leadoff triple in the fifth inning he was replaced by Zeimet, who prevented the run from scoring and preserved Preston’s 3-0 lead. Zeimet pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and a pair of seventh-inning runs.

Preston will face Midland in the district championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Calamus. The Trojans (16-9) have won 12 of 13 since going through a five-game losing streak that included a pair of one-run losses to Lisbon on June 20 in Preston. The lone loss in the recent hot spell came during a doubleheader split with Midland on July 5.

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the Tuesday’s Substate 4 game at Iowa City West against the winner of Saturday’s game between Iowa Mennonite School of Kalona and Van Buren of Keosauqua.
