Campie stays alive with narrow victory
An aggressive second period kept Camanche's Eric Campie alive in the 145-pound consolation bracket at the Iowa High School state wrestling tournament.
Campie built a 6-2 lead in the second period, and outlasted Spencer's Isaiah Spencer 6-5 in the consolation bracket later Thursday morning.
Spencer made it interesting in the third period, with a takedown in the first 30 seconds, cutting the deficit to 6-4. However, he was only able to muster one more point, giving Campie a decision.
Campie (42-11) on Friday will face the loser of the Kalton Keller and No. 9 Joey Busse quarterfinal matchup. Campie's victory was the final matchup featuring area wrestlers in Class 2A for Thursday.
Central DeWitt's Zeimet battles back
It didn't take long for Central DeWitt's Keaton Zeimet to battle back from a first-round defeat.
Zeimet pinned Tyler Stein in 31 seconds to advance to Friday in the consolation bracket at 106 pounds in Class 2A. Zeimet will face the loser of the quarterfinal match featuring Sam Nelson and Colby Lillegard.
Lillegard is ranked fifth, while Nelson is ranked ninth. Zeimet, ranked third, improved to 42-2 with the win.
Smith escapes with narrow victory at 195 pounds
No. 5 Nick Smith, of Central DeWitt, rode out Webster City's Caleb Olson in the third period to escape with a 5-4 first-round victory at 195 pounds in the Iowa High School state wrestling tournament.
Smith was in control for the majority of the first two periods, until Olson escaped midway through the second period, and then recorded a late takedown, to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Smith improved to 24-1 with the win and now moves on to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 Nick Foss, of Harlan. Foss opened the tournament with a pin over Blake Anderson in 4:56.
Crigger advances with pin
Camanche's Baylor Crigger didn't waste any time in his march through the 152 pound weight division of the Iowa state wrestling tournament.
Crigger, ranked sixth in Class 2A at 152 pounds, recorded a pin in 2:06 over Caleb LaLonde, of West Burlington. Crigger and LaLonde were on the feet for the first part of the first period, before Crigger recorded the match's first takedown with a little more than 30 seconds left in the first period. LaLonde escaped to end the first period, giving Crigger a 2-1 advantage heading into the second period.
Crigger then worked his way to the pin early in the second period. Crigger will now face Mitchel Mangold, a junior, from West Delaware.
Mangold is ranked fifth at 152 pounds and is 36-5 on the season. Crigger improved to 46-3 with the win.
Steffen earns decision over Campie
No. 6 Ryan Steffen, of Cresco-Crestwood, rode out Camanche junior Eric Campie to earn a 6-1 decision in the first round of the 145-pound weight division at the Iowa High School state wrestling tournament.
Steffen didn't waste any time, earning a takedown 30 seconds into the match. Campie escaped moments later, putting the score at 2-1 early in the first period.
Steffen got another takedown late in the first period, giving him a 4-1 edge heading into the second period. Steffen increased his lead a minute into the second period with another takedown, putting him up 6-1.
Steffen rode out the rest of the second period and the entire third period to win by decision.
Campie now faces Isaiah Spencer in the consolation round. Spencer is a sophomore from Spencer and is 30-13 on the season. He lost by fall to No. 1 Noah Fye in the first round.
Central DeWitt's Zeimet loses 1st round match
No. 2 Matthew Lewis, of Centerville, was too much for No. 3 Keaton Zeimet, of Central DeWitt, in first-round action this morning at 106 pounds in Class 2A.
Lewis took care of Zeimet in first-round action 15-1, winning by major decision. Zeimet had only lost one previous match all season. Lewis is 38-2 on the season, and was a district runner-up, behind No. 1 Jarod Kadel.
Zeimet now squares off in the consolation round against Tyler Stein, sophomore, who is 36-16 on the season. Stein lost 2-1 in the first round to Kolten Crawford.
