Herald Staff Report

PEARL CITY, Ill. — West Carroll put up three runs in the top of the first inning and then put the game away with a six-run third inning as it defeated Pearl City 11-3 in Northwest Upstate Illini Conference softball Wednesday.

The win gave the Thunder (22-5, 12-1 NUIC) at least a share of the conference title.

“We were able to take advantage of our hits and PC errors to score the 11 runs,” West Carroll coach Don Mathey said. “Our defense did a very nice job holding them to only three runs on their nine hits.”

The Thunder opened the game with successive singles by Chelsey Sipe, Kaiti Mathey (3-for-4) and Katie Wiersema (2-for-4), the latter scoring the first run. The other two eventually came around to score, too, on Pearl City miscues.

Pearl City (6-13 NUIC) got two runs back in the bottom of the first — Nicole Lawler doubled in one run with one out and scored on a two-out single — but West Carroll put the game out of reach with its six-run third.

Kaiti Mathey started the uprising with a one-out double. Jennesa Miller had a run-scoring single in the inning, Jordan Kasbohm hit an RBI double and Brittany Mackey also had a run-scoring single.
