Preston prevails in pair

CAMANCHE — It was a dominant night for the Preston Trojans on the mound with starters Colton Bormann and Matt Zeimet both throwing complete games as they swept Camanche in Thursday’s Big East Conference doubleheader, 10-0 and 7-3.

Bormann led Preston to victory in the first game and had little to worry about as the Trojans offense scored early and often, allowing him to focus on the mound.

On the road, the Trojans came out swinging against Indians starter Seth Boysen, scoring three runs in the top of the first on three hits and an error. That was all the run support that Bormann needed against Camanche, but the Trojans’ offense wasn’t done.

“Colton’s a good pitcher, so we knew we had our work cut out for us,” Camanche coach Daryl Cochran said.

In the second inning, Boysen put the Trojans down without giving up a run, but he hit a wall in the third. The Trojans were sitting on all of Boysen’s pitches, dropping in six hits that included an RBI double for Bormann. The Trojans batted around that inning, scoring five runs and putting themselves ahead 8-0.

Bormann continued to cruise along on the mound, retiring eight straight hitters at one point and keeping Camanche hitless through the first three innings. Boysen logged the only hit of the game for the Indians on a leadoff single in the fourth.

“He’s been solid, he’s a senior and he’s rock solid,” Preston coach Matt Ash said of Bormann’s performance. “He’s someone who we lean on. It took him a little to settle in, he kind of loosened up by the third inning.”

In addition to one hit allowed, Bormann walked two and struck out seven through five innings for the 10-0 win.

“I felt pretty good tonight. If I can get any pitch working, I like to keep them mixed up, keep them off balance,” he said.
