Queens win rainy battle with Burlington

(Continued)

The Queens will play Saturday at West Liberty for their next contest.

Marion edges Maquoketa girls

MAQUOKETA — Atop the WaMaC conference, Maquoketa came into Thursday 9-2 on the season and 6-1 in the conference. However, Marion appeared to have the edge, taking the match 2-1.

Maquoketa goalkeeper Tracy Haley recorded nine saves in the contest, while Demi Crist scored the Cardinals’ lone goal on an assist from Taylor Bickford. Now at 9-3, Maquoketa moved into a tie with Solon for first place in the WaMaC East division.

Rebels fall in shootout

GOOSE LAKE — One-hundred minutes of play couldn’t decide the Northeast-Western Dubuque girls matchup. After taking a scoreless game to a shootout, it was the Rebels who found themselves on the losing end, being outshot by the Bobcats 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Hannah Near and Cara Soenksen netted Northeast’s two shootout goals. Keeper Victoria Kuznetsova also recorded 16 saves in the overtime loss.

Northeast will take a week off before hosting Davenport Assumption next Thursday at 4 p.m.

Rough go for Kings

BURLINGTON — Even with the rain delaying things two hours, there seemed to be no stopping Burlington’s scorers from finding the net. Alec Woodward, Jacob Huber, Javier Garcia and Mauricio Cardenas each scored for the Grayhounds, defeating Clinton 4-0.

Burlington’s goalkeeper, Guage Pender, totaled 10 saves on the night.

The River Kings fell to 3-9-1 on the season. They’ll host Davenport West on Tuesday for the regular-season finale at 7 p.m. on the Ashford University Field.
