High School Softball Posey powers DeWitt over Clinton

CLINTON — It didn’t seem to matter which Clinton pitcher opposed Central DeWitt’s Brooke Posey on Wednesday. She was going to take her extra bases, RBIs and runs and continue her own dominance on the mound.

Posey’s individual stat line during the River Queens’ Senior Night was a collection of figures whole teams aspire for: seven strikeouts in as many innings pitched, three doubles, two RBIs, two runs scored, one unearned run allowed. It was the fuel behind an 8-1 Sabers win, with Posey accounting for half of the team’s score.

“It kind of speaks for itself. She’s been a workhorse,” DeWitt coach Lee Swanson said. “She just swings the ball hard, and on the mound, there’s a presence. We relax behind her. It’s nice to see.”

Posey sent down 17 of Clinton’s first 19 batters before the River Queens bats awoke in the seventh inning. Hits by Sydney Davis and Taylor Altemeier led to Clinton’s only run, with Davis scoring on a double steal.

Altemeier led the team with two hits. Otherwise the home bats were pretty quiet, managing five total hits as a team.

“Our offense never really caught on,” Clinton coach Trina Cewe said. “We brought half of our game — the defense — but offense was lacking a little bit tonight.”

Before the game, Clinton honored its two seniors — Courtney Harlock and Keirstyn Davis. Harlock took the mound, and aside from two runs allowed in the first inning, kept the game within striking distance. She was replaced after five innings, with DeWitt leading 3-0.

The Sabers then strung together two late rallies in the sixth and seventh innings. Posey knocked another double in the sixth, scoring teammate Katie Irwin. In the seventh, Calloway Kinney looped a two-run single to right field and later scored on a Hailey Seitz scorcher along the third-base line.
