River Hawks advance

Herald Staff Report
The Clinton Herald

---- — SPRINGVILLE — Easton Valley was held to its second-lowest point output of the season, but that still was more than enough for the River Hawks to advance to the Iowa Class 1A District 7 championship game with a 50-35 win against Midland on Tuesday night.

The River Hawks, ranked 10th in the Iowa Associated Press Class 1A poll, will face No. 8 Springville at 7 p.m. Thursday in Clarence for the district title. The winner will face either Danville or Lone Tree on Saturday in Iowa City for a berth in the state tournament. Easton Valley handed Springville its lone loss of the season, 60-52, on Jan. 3 in Springville.

Logan Wilhelm, Easton Valley’s 6-foot-8 senior center, scored half his team’s points as it beat Midland for the third time this month. This one was much closer and low-scoring than the earlier matchups — 96-59 and 91-54 victories.

Easton Valley (19-2) built a 7-0 lead over the first five minutes and never trailed. The Eagles (9-14) did close within 7-5, though, and got as close as 11-9 in the second quarter.

The River Hawks led 19-12 at halftime behind eight points from Chase Zaruba. He finished with 12, about half his season average.

Wilhelm carried the offense in the second half, scoring 20 of his points after intermission. Included was Easton Valley’s only 3-point basket of the night.
