Cardinals complete sweep of the Fillies

ERIE, Ill. — Completing a two-night sweep, Erie came home Thursday and defeated Morrison 48-36 in Three Rivers Conference girls basketball.

The Cardinals (17-8, 7-4 conference) followed up on a 46-42 win over the Fillies on Wednesday in Morrison, Ill., in a game that had been postponed earlier in the season.

“That was a tough, physical game by both teams,” Erie coach Brian Howell said. “This was a good win after playing them last night at their place.”

The teams were tied at 28 entering the fourth quarter, but Caitlin Maloney hit a 3-pointer and scored all six of her points over the final eight minutes, Courtney Cobert added five points and Rachel Cobert scored four.

For the second night in a row, the Cardinals were led by the backcourt duo of Bailee Classen and Courtney Cobert, both of whom had missed several games because of injuries.

Cobert matched her point total from Wednesday, scoring a team-high 13 points. Classen, who had 11 on Wednesday, scored 10 on Thursday.

“Bailee Classen had another great night for us,” Howell said.

Classen helped jumpstart Erie’s offense in the second quarter. Morrison led 6-4 after one period, getting four points from Ashley Greul. But, Classen opened the second quarter with a 3-point basket, added another moments later and scored two more before the Cardinals went to the locker room with a 19-16 halftime lead.

But, Greul scored five points in the third quarter to help Morrison come back and pull even.

Chelsea Eads scored a game-high 14 points for the Fillies.

Wednesday’s game was pretty even all the way through, with both teams scoring 13 points in the first and third quarters and Erie outscoring Morrison 10-8 in each of the second and fourth quarters.

In addition to the 24 combined points from Courtney Cobert and Classen, Rachel Cobert finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Minnesota State University-Mankato's football team has ended its boycott of reinstated head coach Todd Hoffner, who successfully fought child pornography charges and other misconduct accusations that removed him from the job for 20 months.

Hoffner said he assured the players, who refused to take the practice field Wednesday, that interim coach Aaron Keen, who led the team in Hoffner's absence, will continue in a major role with the team.
