SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – There certainly were highlights, but there wasn’t a victory for the Ashford baseball team Tuesday.
Senior McKinley Portice tossed six strong innings for the Saints, junior Lawrence Herron belted his first career home run and freshman Tyler Davis recorded the first two-hit game of his young career. But the rest of the Ashford offense managed only one hit in a 3-2 loss to Benedictine in a nine-inning game.
Connor Jacobs surrendered one hit in six innings for the Bulldogs (5-6) to earn the win, and Jordan Day drove in two runs with an inside-the-park home run in the seventh inning off reliever Ian Hamilton.
The Saints (4-8-1) found life in the top of the eighth inning when Kalamazoo, Mich, native Herron stepped up with two outs and blasted a two-run shot over the right-field wall.
Next up for the Saints is a trip to Canton, Mo., on Sunday for a pair of games against Culver-Stockton College.
