DES MOINES – Trailing midway through the second half, the Ashford University women’s basketball team rallied for a 61-54 win over the Eagles of AIB College of Business.
Junior Madison Wagner poured in a season-high 17 points for the Saints, while sophomore Elizabeth Nardi had 11 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double, as the Saints recorded their second consecutive win to improve to 3-5 on the year.
Johnikka Nash led all scorers with 21 points, but the Eagles fell to 3-4 with the loss.
The Eagles started the game on a 7-1 run, but the Saints battled back to take their first lead at the 7-minute, 25-second mark of the first half after Wagner made it 18-16 with a pair of free throws. AIB reclaimed the lead and led 28-26 at the break.
Ashford continued to trail through the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Saints snatched the lead for good with 9:49 left when Wagner connected on a three-point play. AIB cut the lead to 56-54 with two minutes to go, but the Saints collected the game’s final five points at the free-throw line to close out the game.
Junior Quinn Rear added 13 points for Ashford, as the team knocked down 33.3 percent (22-for-66) of its shots while holding the Eagles to 32.1 percent (18-for-56) from the floor.
Ashford was dominant on the glass, pulling down 54 rebounds to 37 for the hosts. Both teams took exceptional care of the basketball, with AU holding a 10-9 advantage in the turnover battle.
The Saints look to keep their winning streak intact Saturday, when they head to Joliet, Ill., for a meeting with the University of St. Francis at 5 p.m.
