Fulton's Simmons wins junior varsity crown

KEWANEE, Ill. — Blaine Simmons of Fulton won medalist honors at the Three Rivers Conference junior varsity boys golf tournament Thursday, shooting a 7-over-par 79 at Baker Park Golf Course.

Simmons shot a 41 on the front nine and came home in 38 to win the title by five strokes.

Logan Bennison of Kewanee and Adam Linketis of Peru St. Bede tied for second at 84.

Led by Cjamce Bender and Bryce Smith, Morrison finished second in the team standings with a 365 total. Bender and Smith each shot an 88 to tie for sixth place. The Mustangs’ Brennan Bender just missed a top-10 finish, taking 11th with a 91.

Kewanee, which won the varsity title Tuesday, shot a 350 to take junior varsity honors. Erie was eighth with a 399, Fulton was ninth with a 405 and Prophetstown placed 11th with a 431.

Derek Redell led Erie with a 93, and Jerid Coffin and Kevin Sigel each shot a 104 for Prophetstown.

Thunder boys win

EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. -- Sean Keckler made six pars and finished with a 38 to lead West Carroll to a 175-180 win against East Dubuque in a boys golf dual Wednesday at the Lacoma Golf Course Red Course.

Michael Motsch of East Dubuque shot a 2-over par 37 to claim medalist honors. He had a birdie-3 on No. 2 in his round.

Keckler had a string of pars from No. 3 through No. 7 and another on No. 9 for the Thunder. Cameron Ehlers made two pars and came in with a 43 for the Thunder.

First for West Carroll

SAVANNA, Ill. -- West Carroll picked up its first win in girls golf Wednesday, finishing ahead of Pearl City in a triangular at Palisades Golf Course.

Hayley Guilinger shot a 43 to lead the Thunder to a 225 team total and earn medalist honors.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

    Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
    The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
    The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
    "College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
    Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
    Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
    He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
