DES MOINES – Ashford split with AIB College of Business and Mother Nature over the weekend, with each of the three coming out on top once.
After dropping the opening game of Saturday’s baseball doubleheader 4-1, the Saints outlasted the Eagles in the second meeting, picking up a 4-3 win in 11 innings after Manny Acevedo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sunday’s contest was rained out.
Acevedo finished with a team-high three RBIs on the day. Junior Tanner Courtney drove in two runs and junior Larry Herron had four hits to lead the way for the Saints.
Trailing by a run in the top of the fourth in Game 1, the Saints (11-19-1) pulled even after Acevedo brought Tyler Davis home with a sacrifice fly to center field for his 11th RBI of the year.
The Eagles got to Ashford starter McKinley Portice (1-3) in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on a pair of hits to take the lead.
Ashford fought back in the second game after AIB scored once in each of the first three innings against starter Jimmy Six.
The Ashford bats came to life in the fifth. Courtney and Acevedo each had RBI hits.
Herron led off the top of the seventh with a single and advanced to third with one out before coming in to score on Courtney’s second RBI single of the game, sending the contest to extra innings.
