Iowa State suspends Nader
AMES (AP) — Iowa State University has suspended Abdel Nader from the basketball team after his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving over the weekend.
Iowa State University police arrested Nader around 11:40 p.m. Saturday on suspicion that he was operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Online court records did not show any formal charges against Nader Sunday, and police officials did not immediately respond to a message.
Nader is a 6-foot-6 small forward who sat out this past season after transferring to Iowa State from Northern Illinois.
Nader led Northern Illinois with 13.1 points a game in 2012-13, and he was expected to play next season.
Iowa State athletic department spokesman Matt Shoultz said Nader has been suspended indefinitely in accordance with the conduct policy for athletes.
ISU gets UNLV transfer
DES MOINES (AP) — One of the rare setbacks Iowa State suffered last season came in February, when five-star prep shooting guard Rashad Vaughn chose UNLV over the Cyclones.
Iowa State has responded by giving a scholarship it had earmarked for Vaughn to Bryce Dejean-Jones — the leading scorer for the Runnin’ Rebels last season.
Dejean-Jones, a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility left, said Sunday he plans to play his final season at Iowa State.
Dejean-Jones, a shooting guard who averaged 13.6 points a game last season, said he decided Iowa State was the right fit after visiting Ames over the weekend.
Blue wins Illinois spring game
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois quarterbacks Riley O’Toole and Wes Lunt led the Blue team to a 38-7 win over the Orange during the intrasquad scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.
The Illini’s spring game Saturday afternoon gave Tim Beckman and his coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate the teams’ performance. The Blue squad took control of the game early on, with O’Toole throwing for two touchdowns in the first quarter. The third quarterback contender, Aaron Bailey, had a 2-yard rush for the only touchdown for the Orange.
The trio will continue to battle for the starting slot.
