Mistakes hurt LumberKings

CLINTON — A picture perfect day for baseball didn’t end up that way for the Clinton LumberKings, who fell to the visiting Fort Wayne TinCaps 6-4 in 11 innings on Saturday at Ashford University Field. Sunday’s finale to the six-game homestand was rained out.

The longest game of the season for the LumberKings, both in innings and game time (3:40) saw teams trade the lead five times. Fort Wayne scored one unearned run off LumberKings closer Rafael Pineda to tie the game in the ninth and two more off Pineda and Leoncio Munoz in the 11th (both unearned) en route to a 6-4 win.

Clinton had opportunities to walk off with a win in both the ninth and the 10th. The LumberKings had men on first and second with one out in the ninth, but Christian Carmichael grounded into an inning-ending double play. In the 10th, Clinton saw the first two men reach but couldn’t score.

Pineda struck out Mallex Smith to begin the 11th. Josh VanMeter reached on an error, and he later scored the winning run on an RBI single by Fernando Perez.
