---- — CLINTON – Any time someone records a first career goal, it’s a moment to remember. For one member of the Ashford University women’s soccer team, Wednesday night is one she won’t soon forget.

Sophomore defender Sierra Romero netted the golden goal in the 97th minute, her first career tally, to propel the 18th-ranked Saints to a 1-0 overtime win over Clarke University.

Senior goalkeeper Jessica VanDyke turned aside all seven shots she faced for her eighth win and fourth shutout of the year as AU (8-2) extended its winning streak to four games.

The game’s winning goal came when Romero grabbed a loose ball in the Clarke zone. The Cary, Ill., native then dashed up the middle of the field before putting a shot past Crusader goalkeeper Hilary Van Praage. Romero’s goal was the Saints’ lone shot on net.

Ashford’s defense was strong throughout the game, as all seven Crusader shots on goal came from deep. VanDyke came up clutch in the extra session, turning aside a pair of shots before the game-winner. Clarke dropped to 6-7.

Shots were 13-10 in favor of the Saints, led by a game-high five from sophomore Alicia Tamburro. Emily Janecek led all Clarke attackers with four shots.

AU also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Next up for the Saints is a trip to McKenzie, Tenn. for a meeting with the Wildcats of Bethel University (Tenn.) on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
