Men fall in Top-10 battle

---- — DES MOINES – Jonny Macadam scored two minutes into the second overtime, sending eighth-ranked Grand View past No. 5 Ashford 2-1 in non-conference men’s soccer Wednesday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

Ashford (8-3-1) battled back from a goal down in the second half, tying the game 1-1 when freshman midfielder Murilo Ceruli scored his third goal of the season on a feed from Javier Ramirez in the 72nd minute.

The game’s first goal came in the ninth minute, when the Vikings’ Gustavo De Souza beat Ashford goalkeeper Kinsella on a feed from Andrew McLeavy. Kinsella finished with five saves.

Shots were all square at 17 each, with AU’s Lucas Almeida firing a game-high seven shots. Erik Hundevad stopped four shots for the Vikings (10-2).

Corner kicks were 7-5 in favor of the Vikings. Grand View committed 17 fouls to 15 for the Saints.

The Saints will return home for their next game at noon Saturday, when they welcome the Griffins of Westminster College of Salt Lake City (Utah) to the South Campus field.
